I have always been fascinated by English Language Learners. I am not one but it is as if I am a failed language learner. I took many years of Spanish and I am not fluent nor was I ever. I put my children in dual immersion so they would not be like me (that has been interesting as well).
I am really concerned with our English learners who are stuck in the intermediate phase. I assume it is their reading skills based on all of their testing scores but is it vocabulary alone? Phonics? Lack of background knowledge? Motivation? Sight words? Obviously, there is not a simple answer but I sure wish there was. At my school, we have a huge population of kids that don’t seem to progress past the expanding phase. That is probably my biggest wonder at the moment.
